Warm up, cool down and the stuff in between
Without scripts, choreographed steps or composed music the only thing we as improvisers bring to the stage is our body and our voice. So how can we take good care of ourselves before, after and also during a show?
As a trained musical theatre actress I have been coached by many different teachers with their own unique approaches to this vital topic. For more than 20 years I have collected tools and tricks that work best for me and I am excited to share them with you.
Here are some examples of things we will do:
- A very effective way how to calm yourself down before a show
- Create a little ‘spa’ for your vocal chords
- Learn the anatomy of your body, because knowledge is power
- Some nice stretches from yoga and dance, that you can use for warming up
- Breathing and meditation to mentally prepare for a show
- Useful tips on how to take care of your voice after you have strained it (whoops)
- Use different filters on your voicebox for new characters
So bring some comfy clothes, stay hydrated and get ready to make funny noises! As my favorite voice coach says: “A siren a day keeps the doctor away!”

Location
Ursula Anna Baumgartner
Born in Austria, Ursula trained professionally as an actress and a musical performer. After landing a series of roles in major musicals all over Germany (including Mamma Mia!, Hair, Aida, West Side Story, Buddy Holly), she moved back to her home country, where she is now an active member of the theatre and improv scene.
Ursula founded the ensemble „Salon Spontan“ to bring fully improvised musicals to the stage, she also explores physical improv alongside her duo partner Anne Rab as „Bemme & Melange“, as well as vying for Vienna’s ugliest Theatresports trophy as one of the TAG theatre’s improv „All Stars“. When Ursula isn’t making things up as she goes along, she can often be found performing theatre shows and musicals at Vienna’s „Theater der Jugend“, in a studio working as a voice actress or on tour with her duo „Baumgärtner“, which explores the parallels between humans and trees via original songs and scenes.
