Poetry for improvisers

If you are an improviser interested in discovering artistic horizons—or perhaps you are a musical improviser looking to add a more artistic depth to your songs—writing poetry can only help.

In this course with writer and improviser Ollie Mason, we will write poetry—examine its limbs, its head, and heart. We’ll explore poetic turns, poetic voices, metaphors and a wealth of new poetic techniques. We may reflect on improv along the way with occasional games to help you explore, however in this course you will primarily be writing.

Though we will write, we will not necessarily be sedentary—poets need to explore for inspiration, and exploring like a poet is a muscle we will train. We will take you out of the studio, and into the world—poets like nothing more than a good walk. Expect to bring objects that inspire and to find new meaning in them along the way.

Poetry beginners are welcome, non-native speakers are encouraged—and can provide much needed perspective on English. Writing doesn’t have to be in English, all languages are welcome, and multilingual poems are fun explorations into culture.

You will write poetry and find beauty—maybe even where you least expect it.
