Quirk, Charm, Whimsy.
Improvisers get inspiration from all sorts of places. If you’ve ever watched a film and thought “Wow, I would love to play a scene like this on stage!” then you know exactly what we’re talking about.
In this course, we will focus on bringing some of that on-screen magic to our improv. We will do this through discussing and experimenting based on the works of two great directors of our time, Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Love and Thunder) and Greta Gerwig (Barbie, Ladybird).
Both of these directors are rooted in mumblecore, a film genre based on naturalistic acting and improvisation. They have managed to bring quirk and whimsy to big-budget box office hits while telling stories about everyday people. People who are relatable and multi-dimensional. People who make mistakes and live the consequences of their choices, but always with a touch of humor and realistic light-heartedness.
The teacher of this course is film nerd Christianna Tsigkou, who is not only a film school alumna but was also a film editor and did production design for (award-winning) short films and web series. Next to being an improviser and a master student in theatre.
This 8-week course consists of equal amounts of fun homework and trying it out on stage. We will be watching films in preparation for class, discussing and playing scenes, and trying out all the elements we discover as we analyze Waititi and Gerwig’s work through our improvisers’ eyes.
