Audition – New Flock Production

The next production of Flock Theatre will be directed by Gael Doorneweerd-Perry. The exact theme and format are still to be confirmed, but will be designed during Gael’s artistic residency on a tall ship in the Arctic Circle.

We will hold auditions for actors and musicians on 2 separate days in July. Pick the one that fits you!

We also offer for the first time the opportunity to apply without auditioning:

  • As an actor if you cannot make any of the dates, but we have collaborated before. Not showing up for the audition will reduce your chances to get cast, but your application will be seriously taken into account anyways.
  • As a musician if you cannot make any of the dates, but we have collaborated before. Not showing up for the audition will reduce your chances to get cast, but your application will be seriously taken into account anyways.
  • As a production assistant. This is a new position for this production: we are looking for a production assistant that will accompany the rehearsal process and show planning from September on. Read more below.

About this production

This new production will be an unscripted—or partially unscripted—theatre show. Most of the details are still to be determined, but we will update this page at the beginning of July with more details on the content.

For this production, we are looking for 1-5 actors and 1-3 musicians.

The actor(s) will improvise the scenes on stage, and the musician(s) will improvise the music for the play. These 2 groups of players plus the technical improviser will inspire each other, listen to each other, and build on each other’s ideas to bring the show to life.

You can express your interest for potential other positions—technician, set designer, costume designer, etc.—directly via email to Gael, and your interest will be considered outside of the auditioning process depending on the needs of the show.

About Flock Theatre Productions

Flock Theatre productions are shows where we cast players for a week of shows, often in a particular genre. The cast will rehearse for approx. 3 months on Wednesday mornings, from 10:00 to 12:00 led by the director (Gael).

The Flock Theatre style of shows is theatrical and feels like scripted. We love making theatrical improv that makes audiences feel something and transport them into the worlds we create. We commit to the work and find joy in geeking about this art form.

Previous Flock Theatre productions included Bloodline, The Matrix, Transperceneige, The True North, I Will Survive, Operations. Relations. Complications. and Skin Hunger.

Applying without auditioning

As mentioned previously you can apply even if you aren’t able to make it to the audition. The same way as above, you can fill up the corresponding RSVP below, and you might be asked to send a bit more information about yourself.

What will happen in the audition?

In this audition, participants are invited to join the exercises and scene setups that the director (Gael) will prompt. No need to prepare, just show up (on time😊).

Actors will be given scenes to improvise and musicians will be invited to score scenes.

Our auditions are intended to be a pleasant experience (and participants agree), where you actually learn something, get to know Flock Theatre, and have a good time.

Within a few days after the last audition day, the candidates who got selected will get an invitation. Once accepted, the other auditioners will be informed as well.

The auditions will take place in the Flock Treehouse, in our little theatre. The location is on the first floor—and therefore not wheelchair accessible. If you need any accommodation, it is fully possible to swap the location of the audition, and therefore have your session in an accessible studio on Treehouse. ♿ Just let us know, as well as any other accessibility needs you might have.

Once cast, all performers are asked to do research, homework and/or promotion of the show (which includes postering, flyering, as well as giving visibility online and in your own networks). This will take approximately 1 hour a week, and is usually considered fun to do. If you take part in the audition, you agree that—when cast—you will make time for this as part of your commitment.

This is our main production of Winter 2024 and we expect a professional attitude from our performers in things like punctuality, communication, and commitment to the work.

Who can audition?

We love meeting new faces, unexpected talents, and a diversity of players. 👩🏾‍🦱👩‍🦽🧕🏽🌈👳🏻‍♂️🦾🦻🧠🤶 (Yes, we have cast players that we met at the audition for the first time). So checkout below in which category you fit, and RSVP to this audition!

Actors

Anyone with some experience in improvising or acting in scripted play is welcome to audition!

We do want to fill up our auditions with people that are interested in what we do, what type of theatre we produce, and that are aware of the conditions we can offer for this production. Therefore, we ask you—before applying—to read well this page and the information in it, to make sure that you check out what Flock Theatre has been producing so far and that you are excited about joining our next project.

Musicians

Anyone who has a good control over their instrument(s). The style of unscripted theatre that we produce tends to lean on theatricality, and the music is therefore seen as a soundtrack of the play we are creating.

Your experience in improvised music or improvised theatre does not have to be a determining factor if you are available and excited to join the project as well as to commit. We are used to work with a multitude of live musicians for our projects, and some of the rehearsals will be also split between actors and musicians in order for the musicians to find each other musically.

Production assistant

We are looking for the first time to add a production assistant to the team. The role of the production assistant will be entailing:

  • Helping out along the rehearsal process with practical production questions—set, costume, etc.
  • Being a driving force on different production tasks:
    • Marketing—online and offline
    • Research for subsidies and sponsors
    • Logistics around the shows
    • Floor management and volunteer management during the show week
  • Some tasks are already done: rehearsal rooms are booked, the theatre venue is booked, the graphic design and administrative tasks revolving to ticket sales will be handled.
  • The production assistant is welcome to shadow the rehearsal process but not required to attend rehearsals—no need to be available on Wednesday mornings.
  • The production assistant is encouraged to take initiative around the topics of production, as well as will receive the support of the core team of Flock Theatre.

In order to apply, you should be excited and available for the show week. Experience in production is a plus, and knowledge of Flock Theatre is a plus as well, but we will consider all applications.

Does it cost anything?

Taking part in the audition is free of charge. And as this is not a course but a production, there is no course fee involved during the process thereafter.

Flock Theatre is striving to professionalize the field of improvised theatre through different means including the payment of the people involved in the productions.

Flock Theatre will cover all costs linked to the production—rental of the rehearsal room, rental of the theatre, of the set and equipment, administrative costs and any other implied costs. At this stage and for this project though, no pay can be guaranteed for the actors, musicians, technicians, directors or producers of this production.
